One of the most controversial topics in the United States is whether to legalize Marijuana, although it is under the discretion of the State Senators. The Texas Senators have not agreed to legalize Marijuana in Texas. This becomes controversial because Texas is a border state and legalization might help our neighbors, Mexico, with the drug cartel. Also there is an understanding that Marijuana has no effect on the human body well at least a harmful effect.
The reason I chose this topic to research throughout the semester was because I wanted to know if Marijuana harms the body. In addition to that I wanted to see if in fact the legalization of Marijuana in Texas would benefit Mexico. My findings were a variety of data consisting of opinions, facts, statistics, and documentaries. My sources were usually from organizations, procon, government sites, and news making them mostly reliable.
In my research I found that in fact it is harmful to the human body by causing cancer regarding the fact it is an herb. Even though it comes from a plant smoking this plant in excessive amount will cause cancer, memory loss, and loss of neurons making you lose your intelligence along with your common sense. The fact there is information that Marijuana is a harmful substance even though it can be prescribed it makes an argument against Marijuana to some Medical Professionals. For example Harvard Medical School is against having Marijuana as a prescribed drug because it is shown that it will harm the body more than it will relieve it.
However, when I researched if Marijuana would be beneficial for Texas to be legalized there were various opinions on this matter debating yes and no. For example Congressman O’Rourke believes it is a good idea, but a Senator from Texas, anonymously said, “It would not benefit Texas it would support our children to do drugs making juvenile crimes higher.” There is no agreement on this matter within Texas making it the primary reason why Texas still has not legalized Marijuana. The decision is still in the discretion of the Representatives of Texas and not in the hands of the constituents to vote for this major decision.
This topic is extremely controversial and has no true ending. There is plenty of information regarding the topic although the pros and cons of this topic are the following. Pro of the legalization of Marijuana, there can be a stronger pain killer to relief cancer patients and any other patient in excruciating pain. In addition to that choice it will also stop the cartel from trying to pass Marijuana illegally and the state could benefit by having the plant taxed. Cons it be even more accessible to the youth harming themselves even in a younger age. Also having teens accessible to Marijuana will bring the crime up, but one major solution for that can be for parents to take care of their children and talk to them about the dangers of Marijuana are. Also another solution for the public can be is to have talks about the effects of Marijuana and have a legal age for it, plus educational classes for grade schools. In order for this to happen our Leaders must together and place this plan and make into action, but it will never be noticeable if their people won't speak up.
