Discourse Community Response with Jennifer Tena, Manuel Lopez, and myself on family/friends, sports, and academics.
People communicate on daily basis, but has anyone wondered how does this communication come to happen? There are different ways to communicate whether it is face-to-face, text messages, social media, phone call, or depending on the setting you are in. Language and tone can also change along with your communication in order to get a message across. Communication varies among people since there is different ways to talk to peers than to a professor. All this communication is for an audience and a purpose in academics, sports, or friends/family. In this project I worked with Jennifer Tena and Manuel Lopez face-to-face, but also in a conference call to get our work done.
In academics there are a certain way to address the acceptance, conventions, genre and audience. For example in acceptance in a college level there is a method in how you can apply to a University in Texas. Going to apply.texas.org you can choose the University in Texas you are applying to; most of the Universities in Texas are on this website. After you have selected a University the application process can begin. You can choose what College within the University interest you and you will need to fill out what they are asking you. Most of the time you’ll need to write out at least three essays one in which you will be describing why you want to attend the specific University. When writing these essays you’ll need to keep in mind that a committee will be reviewing them in order to accept you. It is often seen that these essays are the priority in other to get accepted and are written in a formal manner and perhaps personal. For example the student will often say “There are many places a student can choose to go to college, but my choice is simple when I have a great University in my hometown,” rather than if you are telling a friend “I am going to UTEP.” That wouldn’t be appropriate for an application to any University it is too informal. Once these have been filled out there is also a section where you will need to put in your resume of what you did in high school. What you did in high school is every possible academic and volunteer service done and not what parties you attended to. In your resume everything you did has to be there but that it relates to school clubs. After all this has been done and submitted the last step to follow through would be to actually send your transcript to the University. During high school you worked as hard as you could and with your essays, a resume, a transcript, and possibly a good recommendation later you will be accepted. All this is done in a very professional language to where you put your best writing abilities on paper.
When it comes to sports there is no professional language among your teammates everything is fairly calm. When communicating with your coach there is respect in that relationship. When you are out of practice there is a thin line of confidence to talk to them as a friend. This is because when you are at practice he is trying to get the best out of you therefore you do need to do what is asked from you. For example he might be saying, “Come on you can do better than that!” It might not always be the best tone, but he is pushing you more than you think you can stand. Once you are out of practice the relationship with the coach might change to where it is a more comfortable setting. Meaning it becomes even more informal and you can talk to the coach as if you are talking to a friend. For example he might now tell you, “I know I was tough on you, and I want more from you, but you need to get it together shorty.” Also communication with your team includes Facebook, Facebook group, and text messages. Another way of communicating with your team is with signs you come up with once the whole team gets to know each other. There is like a secret code being used in order to establish all plays and calls in order for your opponent not to know. For example my team calls out movements in Japanese to know what we are supposed to do next like “ni mawashigeri” the opponent won’t know what that is. My team usually discusses how we are doing in school since we are all different ages and when we text each other it is usually “Hey, u comin today?” or “We missed ya, you ok?” We are always checking up on each other since we all became one big family.
When you are with your friends and family everything changes. Communication is free meaning that you have your name-calling and that is how that relationship is. Such as when you are telling your brother “Why are you so stupid?” When exploring family’s discourse it is funny how the relationship is because an outsider can hear us and say we are rude to each other. In reality yes it is a tad rude but it is how family is and we know not to take anything too personal since we are all being facetious. For example my family is a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and I am not therefore I live with the nickname of Yahaters. We constantly talk to see where we are and just to give a heads up what we will be doing by sending out a text to each other saying “going home J” or “at work” as simple as that just as a small notification. Friends are almost the same thing it is as if we have our own language since you can see your best friend and know exactly what they are thinking of.
Communication is mesmerizing since there are various ways to actually get a message across. When talking to peers, professionals, professors, and even parents it all changes. When in a group and doing an assignment it gives a turn to trust one another to where nicknames begin. My group was very funny since we all got together and basically got work done, but had lots of fun. For example Jennifer was under the bossy one and Manuel was the engineer; poor Manuel Jen and I gave him a hard time when doing the map because it turned out we are both perfectionists. Communication is enjoyable when you are getting a message across or getting work done. It makes yourself happy or others. One precaution that should be taken when communicating though is that people will often get offended with an opinion you might have. It is often best to keep opinions to yourself till a trust with the other person has been established, and then comments can begin unless it is a constructive criticism.
