The Effects of Social Media
Social media has become a great asset in our daily lives by constantly being on a cell phone checking Facebook, Instagram or even texting through twitter. If we analyze it closely our lives is through social media since almost everyone around you has one and that is the easiest way to contact one another. When walking down the halls of a building or even just walking around campus all you mostly see is students with their heads buried on their phones even when they are in a group of friends. What ever happened to actually being social and communication face to face? Was that also removed because we now have Facetime or Skype? Society is now living through a phone and social media can be considered a part of our culture. Social Media is entertaining and fun and it is a great way to keep lines of communication and even to network, but there is a negative side of social media. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Even though social media can help us get through a rough day some people go through a rough day because of social media. There is cyberbullying still going around or the “reality” behind some of the posts/tweets we see may be a complete lie. The stigma of Facebook and Instagram has become to post everything that happens in our daily lives and the unbeatable selfies, which to some people it has become to post a selfie showing off cleavage or a shirtless picture. You want your peers to see you as something more than you see yourself and your self-esteem gets boosted with the more likes you receive. This has been shown through various news casts such as, CNN, where they are constantly showing breaking news of new updates on social media and warning parents what is happening with the newest apps. In addition to this people who uses can testify to what they do in the cyber-world is different to what they do on a daily basis. These actions are always being observed by psychologists and psychiatrists to testify on local or global news.
Audience and Purpose
Social media is access to information because even news casts have their own social media where it is constantly updated to give the community the breaking news happening around them and the world. For example there is CNN where they even have their own app to give information to you instantly, and in addition you can follow them on any other social media to stay informed. CNN has the information where the whole family can see and they will inform you if any graphic will be shown that it is not appropriate to any child. They make their news to be focused on an audience that everyone can see since they air for the most part during a dinner time. The audience has access to be informed 24/7 no matter where they are although the news cast that has been aired only lasts about 45 minutes where information is condensed and the most important news get to be shown.
Using one to one communication can be difficult simply because not many have the time to talk in person anymore. The targeted audience is for students by students, meaning the information gathered will be for the English class 1312 and the information gathered will be from fellow peers and other UTEP students. The purpose is for their audience to realize what is going on without them knowing and be cognizant that either they are hurting someone by putting rude comments or simply ignoring a problem. The audience will engage in this specific genre for almost a whole day. In this century the students are noticed by how they take notes through their phones and/or are on social media instead of being engaged in their education. Students are most likely to realize an issue that is happening around them when people who are being surveyed around them.
Rhetorical Issues
Between both genres there are various rhetorical issues that will be outlined below. In CNN their logical appeal is that they are professional people who have been reporters or anchors for a number of years now. In addition CNN was established in June first 1980 which has been 34 years of making a good reputation being one the biggest news casts people can trust. They convey to their audience by involving the community and their tone of voice to be softer even if they have harsh news to give. The tone and their serenity is what convey the emotion that they are trying to portray. CNN is supported by the reporters who go out into the communities to investigate and talk to anyone who was in the scene.
In one to one person communication the credibility is established by the word of the person being interviewed. The emotions can vary from excitement, sadness, and/or monotone depending on the person being interviewed, although the person can have sarcasm as well. The evidence that shall be provided will be their personal experience with it. Not everyone has the same experience using social media and through confessions you can see there are students who have such issues. The evidence is valuable because it is getting feedback to a nationwide problem right now.
Structure and Delivery
The structures of both genres are different because they are complete opposites of each other and how the data is obtained makes them different. CNN organizes their information by topic, which in this case the effects of social media, and what breaking news there is from that. In addition to that there is always a segment that shows the most popular videos lately since those seem to be extremely important now-a-days. CNN is also very formal news casts were every news story done is said and executed very professional. Reason being is because they must remain unbiased to the situation and in a language where a family can understand. The structure of a one to one person communication is a statistical data of what others had said. Granted these individuals may lie and create outliers but most can be honest. The language is stated to be informal and more of a daily dialogue. This language is to get to university students and professors to understand in an academic level where no more slang is used.
Conclusion
In conclusion, these two genres are used to inform society and communities of what is going on around them. Social media has been a great asset in our lives, although not many have seen it in that manner since they might be bullied. It opens the doors to traps and hidden clauses that you may not know what you are entering. It is important to listen to your peers and what the news have to say since it is beneficial to you. Take a second look at the UTEP confessions page to realize what is going on around you. There have been posts where a student is asking for help and what do his peers do is laugh about or teases them. The sources for newscasts who give these reports are psychologists or people in the community who we can relate to or people who have been giving reports for several years, who have created reliability among their community. As a campus it is our duty to stop the hazing and help out a fellow classmate.
